The NCAA Tournament's Top Underdogs Are...

2 min read

by Waterboy Sam Meyerkopf

Every year there's a team that glues every hoophead to the screen to savor every second of intense, college basketball magic.  Whether it's VCU's Havoc, Butler's Toughness, or Florida Gulf Coast's Dunk City, there's always a Cinderella story.  Meet this year's top candidates.

Entry #1: The Shooting Squad

The Eastern Washington Eagles do one thing really, really, really well; they score.  The third highest scoring team in the country relies on the country’s leading scorer Tyler Harvey to hit his three’s, center Venky Jois to attack off the drive, and shooters lined up all along the perimeter ready to fire.  In a basketball world that’s continually trending towards shooting and spacing, the Eagles do it better than just about everybody else.

Entry #2: The Father-Son Duo

The Georgia State Panthers are here, in the dance, barely.  After winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship game 38-36 (Yes 38-36), they are in the dance for the first time ever.  And leading the charge is the Father-Son Duo of head coach or “Dad” Ron Hunter (who tore his achilles tendon celebrating their victory) and the star player or "Son" RJ Hunter.  The son is probably headed to the NBA Draft no matter what happens in the tournament but wouldn’t it be fitting if a family became this year's underdog story?

Entry #3: The Brainiacs

The Harvard Crimson aren’t big, at all.  But they are quick and they have one of the most under-appreciated offensive weapons in the country in Wesley Saunders.  He leads the Crimson in scoring and is second in close to every other category.  Harvard will go as far as Saunders will take them but undersized center Steve Moundou-Missi clutch shots don’t hurt either…

Entry #4: The Magic Coach

The Valparaiso Crusaders are coached by school legend Bryce Drew.  Is there anything more to say!? He did this -

Entry #5: The COWBOYS!!!!!

The Wyoming Cowboys have a few things going for them.

1.  Josh Adams who is the recent Mountain West Tournament MVP and proud recipient of a profile in our five under-the-radar performers for the Big Dance

2. Larry Nance’s son who is also a high-flyer like his dad

3. And a Cowboys Fan who dresses like this!

Enjoy the tournament madness!
