What Does It Take to Make It to the Pros?

Just about every ballplayer, at some point of his or her life, has dreamed of making it to the pros. But what does it really take to get there? And how do you balance that desire with the realities of life and everything else that sports can do for you?

Keith Van Horn starred at the University of Utah under legendary coach Rick Majerus, winning WAC Player of the Year honors three times. He was the #2 pick in the 1997 NBA Draft and went on to have a stellar 10-year NBA career, averaging 16 points and nearly 7 boards per game.

Giving Back to the Game

Having retired back in 2008, Keith has transferred his passion to youth sports by founding and working with the Colorado Premier youth basketball organization. In addition to helping players continue to develop on the court, the Premier takes its players' personal development seriously.

“At the end of the day, sports are about the kids and their development as athletes and young men and women. Our goal as a competitive basketball club is to create a positive, family environment where kids can grow not just on the court, but off the court as well,” says Colorado Premier development director Mychal Martinez.

To hear what Keith has to say about playing multiple sports, focusing on winning vs. personal skill development, and how to best motivate your players, you can listen to this podcast with Keith talking about his experiences and approach to making it to the pro ranks.
